Dance Under Construction 8:
Breaking It Down

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Andre Lepecki

Oscillations, stumbles, invisibilities: breaking choreography's ground.

Andre Lepecki's keynote address for the eighth annual Dance Under Construction conference "Breaking It Down" will analyze three choreographic and para-choreographic practices that establish a particular close dialogue between dance and sculpture: Simone Forti's "See-Saw", William Pope.L's crawls, and Ralph Lemon's "Freedom Bus Ride Project." He will propose how each of these pieces not only expand choreography’s dialogues with visual arts, but how they refigure some crucial aspects of choreography's political and ontological grounds: stability, presence, visibility, and movement.

André Lepecki is Assistant Professor at the Department of Performance Studies at NYU. He is the editor of Of the Presence of the Body (Wesleyan University Press 2004) and the author of Exhausting Dance: performance and the politics of movement (Routledge, 2006).
