The Chancellor's Performance Award in Dance

Up to $4,500 is available for excellence in Dance.

Eligibility

New incoming freshmen students (who have already applied for full-time admission to the university), and transfer students (who have applied or plan to in the near future) are eligible to receive the Chancellor’s Performance Award in Dance. Only students enrolling as Dance majors may receive this award.

Audition

Auditions take place each year in February.

The audition comprises taking a class in modern dance technique, and a performance of a short piece (approximately 2-4 minutes) choreographed by applicant or by someone else. The movement style should reveal your strengths in modern technique, ballet, jazz or tap. A CD player will be available to the applicant for music.

Applications are encouraged to wear clothes that applicants can move in freely. Applicants should plan to dance without shoes or socks. Avoid loose, bulky clothing and dangling jewelry, and pin up loose hair.

Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts

Funded by the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation, the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts at UC Riverside brings the arts into the surrounding community with a wide variety of performances, workshops, and presentations aimed at school children, the elderly and community groups.

A vibrant program of dance is the hallmark of the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts at UC Riverside. The Department of Dance continues to work with young people, the elderly, and other community populations in sharing and exploring movement and dance.

The Department of Dance selects graduate Dance Fellows each year to design a project tailored according to each Fellows’ research interests, and to conduct their projects in the community. The Department of Dance also selects the finest undergraduate dance students to become members of three performing ensembles: the Contemporary Dance Ensemble, the Tap Troupe, or the Ballet Folklorico. Students work with faculty members to generate new choreography each year, which they tour to community and regional audiences. The dance ensembles further meet the goals of the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts through education, performances, demonstrations, and by providing dance workshops at schools, nursing homes, and community centers.
